Causes of Memory Loss & Helping Enhance Memory Improvement

Causes of memory loss come in many forms, and it ranges from the trivial type to the more serious ones.

Memory loss is something people should not take lightly. This is made obvious by the sad deterioration that happens to those who have Senile Dementia and Alzheimer's disease. In such a case, losing your memory is not only tantamount to annoyingly failing to recall important facts or event, but losing your very core, the person that you are.

The following are the most common causes of memory loss which, it should be noted, is different from forgetfulness or being unable to retrieve the information when you want it.

Aging

People naturally deteriorate as they grow older. Your brain, hence your memory, is not an exception. But you can minimize the effects aging has on your memory ... on all your bodily organs for that matter ... by taking care of yourself through exercise and right diet.

Drugs

You have to watch what you take into your body. Drugs can seriously affect the efficiency of your brain. Some of them, like benzodiazepines and anaesthetics, only cause temporary memory disturbance. Prohibited drugs, on the other hand, have more serious effect. They can kill the cells in the brain, causing the person to lose his or her memory and even become mentally disturbed.

Alcohol

Alcohol affects your memory in two ways. It may be a temporary period of forgetfulness or a more serious deterioration of important functioning in your brain.

You may already have experienced getting so drunk that you forgot what happened or failed to remember details during the time of intoxication. Memory loss of this type is temporary.

Chronic drinking can lead to vitamin B12 deficiency. As this vital vitamin is important to the proper functioning of your brain, memory loss can be permanent and it usually affects the short term memory.

Idleness

One thing that you want to avoid is for your brain to go sedentary, lest it atrophies. You need to keep using it, to exercise it. This is one of the best ways to keep your memory sharp, to help your brain's structure stay in shape. Happy Neuron is a tool I recommend to help you keep your brain sharp and active.

Neuro generative Disease

Other culprits of memory loss are Neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's Disease and Multiple Sclerosis.

Head Injury

Serious head injuries can lead to permanent impairment and total loss of vital memories. Minor head injuries such as concussion can lead to temporary memory loss.

Stroke

The degree of damage to the memory caused by stroke varies. The damage occurs in conjunction to many other types of damage or neurological deficit that follows a stroke, such as speech problems or paralysis.

Tumors

If tumors occur in structures of the brain that are connected to your memory functioning, then impairment is bound to happen. Memory loss follows.

Infections

A common after effect of infections is the inflammation of brain tissues. This leads to swelling and the consequent inefficiency of blood flow. Damage to the memory areas may result.

Psychological Causes

Depression and anxiety are major causes of memory loss. This often creates a ripple effect as worrying about memory loss leads to increased anxiety and even more memory problems.

Therapeutic Causes

Therapeutic processes can inadvertently cause damage to the memory. Just like some drugs, electroconvulsive therapy and brain surgery can result in unwanted memory loss.

As you can see the causes of memory loss are diverse. However, these causes of memory loss are different from simply not being able to recall something.
